This is a desired feature in a coat stand. Once properly set up, this coat stand is significantly bottom heavy. This helps to keep it upright when unevenly weighed down with a carelessly hung coat. Yes, I'm not always mindful of where I'm putting things on it. Yet unlike the cheaper coat rack it replaced, this tends to remain standing, rather than trapping me under it.Two important features that I was particularly pleased with follow. 1) Note the plate at the bottom of the coat rack. Surprisingly handy for keeping water and slop from umbrellas from going everywhere! 2) Each of the four feet can be adjusted independently. So when you place this on, say, a tile or wood floor with 'character' (slight bumps or dips,) you can make sure the rack is pointing skyward.
